The oud, it seems, is where it’s at nowadays. The elegant stringed instrument may have a history dating back thousands of years, but in the hands of artists such as Le Trio Joubran, Anouar Brahem and London-based Khyam Allami, it’s at the core of exciting, innovative new compositions and performances. Allami – raised in Syria and London, of Iraqi origins – is hard to pin down.
